A color change wrap covers the painted panels of a vehicle in a new finish without touching the factory paint underneath. Full color changes are done in cast vinyl, which is made by pouring liquid vinyl onto a casting sheet and letting it set, so it carries very little built in tension. That matters on bumpers, mirrors and deep door recesses, where the film has to stretch and then stay stretched. Calendered vinyl is rolled and pressed into shape instead, keeps a memory of that rolling, and tends to shrink and lift at edges over time.
Finish is the biggest decision. Gloss reads the most like paint. Satin softens reflections without going completely flat. Matte and color shift films look the most custom and ask a little more in upkeep. Holding real samples against the vehicle outside is the only reliable way to choose, because indoor light and phone screens both lie about color.
Door jambs are the other thing to decide early. A standard color change covers everything you see with the doors closed, so the original color still shows when a door opens. Wrapping the jambs is extra work, which makes it worth asking about when the new color is very different from the old one, like white going to black.

Cast film is poured and set with almost no stress in it, so it stays put on curves and keeps its size. Calendered film is rolled out under pressure and wants to shrink back, which suits flat signs better than a whole car.
On a standard wrap, yes, the jambs keep the original paint. Covering them is possible but adds work, so bring it up when you ask for your estimate.
Yes. Cast vinyl on healthy factory paint comes off with heat, and the paint underneath has been sheltered from sun and chips the whole time it was covered.
